This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1964 for the second release of King Kong vs. Godzilla. This film was originally released in 1962 and then quickly re-released in 1964 due to its immense popularity!
The term Kaiju refers to the "giant monster" film genre in Japan. Interestingly, the Godzilla series was partially inspired by the 1952 Japanese re-release of King Kong, followed shortly by the 1953 film The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. The Japanese title for the latter was 原子怪獣現わる, which translates to "An Atomic Kaiju Appears." Godzilla made its debut in 1954, and King Kong vs. Godzilla became the third film in the Godzilla franchise. It was such a hit that it was re-released theatrically four times over the years!
This rare poster is from the film's second release in 1964. The movie was so popular that it hit theaters again just two years later. However, this second release was a smaller one, leading many collectors to mistakenly think this poster is a variant of the first release. To complicate matters, this design was also used for a 1980s video release. But make no mistake—this is the original!
