Japanese yakuza cinema developed into a major cinematic genre during the postwar period, reaching particular prominence throughout the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Produced by influential studios including Toei, Nikkatsu, Daiei and Shintoho, these films explored the Japanese underworld through stories of loyalty, honour, betrayal, violence and the changing social landscape of modern Japan.

Our collection encompasses original Japanese theatrical posters associated with legendary performers such as Ken Takakura, Kōji Tsuruta, Bunta Sugawara, Akira Kobayashi, Jō Shishido, Meiko Kaji and other defining figures of Japanese crime cinema.

Of particular significance are the classic ninkyō eiga (任侠映画), or chivalrous yakuza films, which flourished during the 1960s and frequently portrayed conflicts between traditional codes of honour and the realities of organised crime. Their original Japanese posters are celebrated for their dramatic portrait photography, bold typography, striking colours and elaborate compositions.

The 1970s witnessed the emergence of the more confrontational jitsuroku eiga (実録映画), or documentary-style yakuza films, particularly through the influential work of Kinji Fukasaku. His landmark Battles Without Honor and Humanity (1973) and its sequels helped transform the genre, replacing romanticised depictions of the underworld with a more chaotic and uncompromising cinematic style.

Our holdings also celebrate the work of influential filmmakers such as Seijun Suzuki, Teruo Ishii, Hideo Gosha, Kinji Fukasaku and Takeshi Kitano, whose films have become internationally recognised for their distinctive visual approaches to Japanese crime cinema.

From the stylised Nikkatsu action films of the 1960s to the celebrated yakuza productions of Sonatine (1993), Hana-bi (1997) and the Outrage trilogy (2010–2017), this collection documents the evolution of Japanese gangster cinema across several generations.

Our extensive selection includes original Japanese B2 and B1 theatrical posters, exceptionally scarce STB Tatekan formats, rare first-release examples, advance promotional designs, unused posters and unusual advertising variants. Many early yakuza posters were produced for comparatively short theatrical engagements and survive in limited numbers, making exceptional examples increasingly difficult to acquire.
