This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1987 for the first release of Grave of the Fireflies.
In this size this poster is very hard to come by and is in super high demand. It is the first time we have had this poster in our gallery. It is the first time that we have seen this poster in Japan for over 7 years even though it is our full time job to do so - this is how rare it is!
This poster is also in immaculate condition. Normally we provide an image of the front and the back of the poster. However, we have provided many additional images to show how good the condition of this poster is!!
There is currently a boom in reprints of this poster (mostly B2 size) flooding the market and for sale right now as Ghibli has been producing these for the past two years officially. There are also many unofficial reprints flooding the market. Many of these are for sale as vintage originals online. This however, is 1000% an original, despite this, it is in almost mint condition. Studio Ghibli is undisputedly the most in demand Japanese animation export as is this movie poster - it is loved by collectors, one-off buyers and many other customers.
Japanese B1 (71 x 103 cm) very large size.
Grave of the Fireflies (Japanese: 火垂るの墓, Hepburn: Hotaru no Haka) is a 1988 Japanese animated war tragedy film based on the 1967 semi-autobiographical short story of the same name by Akiyuki Nosaka. It was written and directed by Isao Takahata, and animated by Studio Ghibli for the story's publisher Shinchosha Publishing (making it the only Studio Ghibli film under Tokuma Shoten ownership that had no involvement from them). The film stars Tsutomu Tatsumi, Ayano Shiraishi, Yoshiko Shinohara [ja] and Akemi Yamaguchi. Set in the city of Kobe, Japan, the film tells the story of two siblings, Seita and Setsuko, and their desperate struggle to survive during the final months of the Second World War. Grave of the Fireflies received critical acclaim and has been ranked as one of the greatest war films of all time and has been recognized as a major work of Japanese animation.
