Original Japanese Bunta Sugawara Movie Posters

Bunta Sugawara (菅原 文太, 1933–2014) was one of the defining figures of Japanese cinema, celebrated for his commanding screen presence and his central role in the transformation of the yakuza film during the 1960s and 1970s. A major star of Toei’s golden age, Sugawara became synonymous with the gritty realism and uncompromising energy of postwar Japanese crime cinema.

His most celebrated performances include Kinji Fukasaku’s landmark Battles Without Honor and Humanity (仁義なき戦い, 1973) and its sequels, which revolutionised the yakuza genre with their documentary-inspired style, political complexity and unflinching depictions of organised crime. Sugawara also starred in the enormously popular Truck Yaro (トラック野郎) series, demonstrating his versatility and establishing himself as one of Japan’s most recognisable leading men.

This collection features original Japanese theatrical movie posters from throughout Sugawara’s distinguished career, including rare first-release examples, striking illustrated designs and distinctive promotional formats. Particularly significant are posters associated with the Battles Without Honor and Humanity series, now regarded as important artefacts of Japanese cinematic history.

Japan Poster Shop’s collection encompasses original posters in B2, large-format and other scarce theatrical formats, reflecting the extraordinary visual culture of Japanese film advertising during the Showa era. Many surviving examples are increasingly difficult to obtain, particularly in excellent condition.

Carefully sourced and individually catalogued in Japan, these posters represent an important chapter in Japanese cinema and are highly sought after by collectors of yakuza films, Japanese graphic design and original vintage movie posters.
