This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1993 to promote the Philip Morris Super Cinema Club “Akira Kurosawa Festival,” a special retrospective marking —

• the 50th anniversary of Kurosawa’s directing career, and

• the theatrical debut of his 30th and final film, Madadayo (released April 1993).

Running 20 March – 16 April 1993 at Tokyo’s Shinjuku Shintei Ciné 1, the festival screened new prints of ten masterpieces, listed in red at right:

3. Drunken Angel

4. Seven Samurai

5. The Hidden Fortress

6. Sanshiro Sugata

7. Yojimbo

8. Throne of Blood

9. High and Low

10. Ikiru

A vivid royal-blue layout frames a photographic cameo of Kurosawa in his trademark cap above a luminous full moon — a nod to the director’s long-standing “sun and moon” visual motifs. The poster was issued only for this limited-engagement series and is seldom seen outside Japan.

It is over 30 years old!
