Sale price $400.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1980 for the first theatrical release of Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (スター・ウォーズ 帝国の逆襲), produced by Lucasfilm and distributed by 20th Century Fox. Featuring artwork by celebrated illustrator Noriyoshi Ohrai, this design is regarded as one of the most iconic Star Wars posters ever created.

Film background
Directed by Irvin Kershner, The Empire Strikes Back is the second installment of George Lucas’s original trilogy. The film expanded the Star Wars universe with the introduction of Yoda, Lando Calrissian, and Boba Fett, while deepening the conflict between the Rebels and Darth Vader. Its darker tone, emotional depth, and the unforgettable “I am your father” twist elevated the saga into legend. Today, it is widely considered the greatest of all Star Wars films.

Poster design
In 1980, George Lucas and 20th Century Fox held an international art competition for The Empire Strikes Back. Ohrai’s striking Japanese artwork — first published as a magazine illustration — was selected by Lucas himself. Lucas was so impressed that Ohrai was commissioned to design the official Japanese release poster — the very one you see here.

This success launched Ohrai’s long association with Star Wars and solidified his global reputation. He went on to create multiple Star Wars illustrations, including promotional campaigns, VHS/Laserdisc art, and anniversary pieces.

The poster itself presents a dramatic painted montage: Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, Lando, and the droids are framed against space battles and Cloud City, with Han and Leia’s kiss at the emotional core. The bold Japanese title “スター・ウォーズ 帝国の逆襲” dominates the lower field in red and yellow. Ohrai’s mastery of composition and color captures both the grand scale and the personal drama, making this a defining piece in Star Wars poster history.
