"Dragon Ball: Mystical Adventure" (ドラゴンボール 魔訶不思議大冒険), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1988, Rare, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) J217A
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1988 for Dragon Ball: Mystical Adventure—the third Dragon Ball feature, produced by Toei Animation and released on 9 July 1988 as part of the summer Toei Manga Matsuri (東映まんがまつり) festival program. Directed by Kazuhisa Takenouchi, scripted by Takao Koyama, with music by Shunsuke Kikuchi, the film remixes the Red Ribbon Army and 22nd Tenkaichi Budōkai arcs into a brisk, theatrical adventure. Unlike the first two features, it introduces no original villains, instead re-casting manga favorites inside an alternate-continuity storyline.
Design
A joyous, motion-packed composition: Kid Goku rockets across the sheet on the Kintoun/Nimbus cloud, flanked by the mischievous Gatchans and a cameoing Arale (from Dr. Slump)—a wink to Toriyama’s shared world. Looming behind is Tao Pai-pai mid-strike, one hand thrusting toward the viewer in perfect foreshortening. The distance reveals the red-walled Mifan Empire palace perched atop sheer cliffs. The playful, dragon-wrapped DRAGON BALL masthead crowns the art; a sunflower Toei Manga Matsuri badge pops at the top right; and the long, brushy orange title 「魔訶不思議大冒険」 races across the speed-line foreground, with small furigana reading aids as printed on the theatrical original. A classic late-’80s Toei palette—sugary skies, saturated primaries, and high-energy streaks—makes this an irresistible wall piece.
Cult status / film notes
A fan-favorite “festival film,” Mystical Adventure encapsulates the early Dragon Ball tone—comedy, wuxia, and world-tour mythmaking—while spotlighting tournament dynamics that would define the franchise. Festival one-sheets were printed in smaller runs and used hard across multiplex lobbies, which is why intact B2s from this title surface far less often than later DBZ posters.
