“Lev Kuleshov Retrospective” (レフ・クレショフ傑作選), Original Japanese Movie Poster 2014, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) N239
This is an original Japanese poster printed exclusively for a local art theater in Hyogo in 2014, created for a limited-time retrospective event celebrating the legendary Soviet filmmaker Lev Kuleshov. The poster was produced specifically to advertise the re-releases of three of Kuleshov’s most influential films: By the Law (1926), The Extraordinary Adventures of Mr. West in the Land of the Bolsheviks (1924), and Two-Buldi-Two (1929).
Lev Kuleshov (1899–1970) is one of the most important figures in cinema history, widely considered the founder of Soviet montage theory. His famous “Kuleshov Effect” demonstrated how editing determines audience interpretation, fundamentally reshaping the language of film. His students, including Vsevolod Pudovkin and Boris Barnet, carried forward his innovations, while his theories influenced Sergei Eisenstein and countless others worldwide.
Poster design
The Japanese B2 poster employs bold, avant-garde styling in homage to Soviet Constructivist aesthetics. Kuleshov himself is prominently featured in a collaged portrait, set against teal-blue geometric patterns with striking yellow typography. Scenes from his films are arranged in montage-style panels, highlighting the retrospective’s program. The Japanese text honors him as “The man who gave birth to montage theory.”
Age & Rarity
Although a modern printing (2014), this poster was issued only for the Hyogo theater’s limited retrospective screenings and never made available for general sale. As such, it remains a scarce collector’s item tied to one of cinema’s foundational theorists.
