"She’s Gotta Have It" (シーズ・ガッタ・ハヴ・イット), Original Japanese Release Movie Poster 1986, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O467
This is an original Japanese B2 poster for Spike Lee’s breakthrough debut She’s Gotta Have It (1986)—a low-budget, black-and-white landmark that launched Lee as a central voice in American independent cinema and announced a new era of Brooklyn-set storytelling.
Design
Vibrant, Memphis-style pop graphics: a neon yellow maze field bounded by a playful border that chants “PLEASE BABY PLEASE,” with cut-out character portraits orbiting around Nola Darling’s central close-up. Hand-drawn title lettering “SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT” pops in candy colors, while katakana 「シーズ・ガッタ・ハヴ・イット」 grounds the local release. The sheet radiates downtown art-scene energy and 1980s post-punk design language.
Cult status / film notes
A watershed of DIY filmmaking and Black independent cinema; winner of the Cannes Prix de la Jeunesse, it paved the way for Do the Right Thing and generations of auteur-driven features and series (including Lee’s later Netflix reimagining).
