"New Kurama Tengu: Gojozaka Duel" (1965) – Original Japanese STB Size Poster
新 鞍馬天狗 五條坂の決闘 | Daiei Film | Starring Raizō Ichikawa | Directed by Yoshiyuki Kuroda

An electrifying and rare original STB-size (tatekan) Japanese poster for New Kurama Tengu: Gojozaka Duel (新 鞍馬天狗 五條坂の決闘), Daiei Film’s 1965 chanbara action drama based on Jirō Osaragi’s classic novel. This film reimagines the legendary masked swordsman Kurama Tengu as a mysterious ronin who secretly aids patriots during the turbulent final days of the Tokugawa shogunate.

Raizō Ichikawa stars as Kurayoshi Norizen, a seemingly carefree temple school teacher in Kyoto who conceals his true identity as Kurama Tengu. When a patriot is attacked by the Shinsengumi, Kurama Tengu intervenes, showcasing his exceptional swordsmanship before vanishing like smoke. The poster captures Ichikawa mid-action, katana drawn, set against a backdrop of Kyoto’s historic Gojozaka district, evoking themes of honor, rebellion, and the struggle for justice.

Directed by Yoshiyuki Kuroda, the film blends intense swordplay with political intrigue, characteristic of Daiei’s mid-1960s period dramas. The poster’s vertical format and dynamic design make it a standout piece for collectors of samurai cinema and vintage Japanese film memorabilia.

This STB-format poster is over 60 years old!
