Ugetsu (1953) is a Japanese period fantasy film directed by Kenji Mizoguchi, based on Ueda Akinari's 1776 book Ugetsu Monogatari. The film blends elements of historical drama and ghost story, set during Japan’s Azuchi–Momoyama period (1568–1600). It follows a potter who, after leaving his family to make money, is seduced by a spirit and forgets his wife and son. A subplot mirrors Guy de Maupassant’s short story How He Got the Legion of Honor, following the potter's brother-in-law, who pursues his dream of becoming a samurai at the cost of his wife.
Ugetsu won the Silver Lion at the 1953 Venice Film Festival and is considered one of Mizoguchi’s masterpieces, hailed for its impact on both Japanese cinema and its international recognition.
