“The hills are alive with the sound of music, with songs they have sung for a thousand years. The hills fill my heart with the sound of music. My heart wants to sing every song it hears.”
B0 x 3: 158 x 288.5 cm, This poster is the largest format that Japanese posters come in and was used for the first showing in 1965, at a cinema in Okayama that is sadly no longer in business. We are very honored to be able to have this amazing, huge poster for one of the most celebrated films in history - The Sound of Music.
Japanese premiere billboards - in this case made from three overlapping B0s - are the rarest posters in Japan. Nearly all were displayed and discarded as they took up so much space and were not desirable for Japanese collectors who are extremely space conscious. For a country that prioritized collecting B5 chirashi, this almost 3 meter wide poster is not feasible to display in most Japanese homes. For this poster to exist 56 years later is unbelievable - we have never encountered another copy anywhere.
The Sound of Music (1965) starring Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Eleanor Parker, and Richard Haydn. Julie Andrews is plays a phenomenal role as the nun who leaves an Austrian convent to become a governess of the family of a naval officer widower. Brilliant songs and music, interesting characters, superb direction, and an inspired screenplay all combine to make this one of the American Cinema's ultimate musicals. Although the tone can be very sweet, certainly the final act with the introduction of the Nazis adds a new sense of fear and drama. Everyone loves the fact the Von Trapp family is able to outwit history's ultimate villains. Nominated for 10 Academy Awards including Best Actress for Andrews, the film won five Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director to Wise.
