Kaneto Shindo (新藤兼人, 1912–2012) was a Japanese director, screenwriter and producer whose extraordinary career spanned more than six decades. A central figure in Japanese independent filmmaking, Shindo developed a distinctive cinematic language characterised by powerful visual compositions, social realism, psychological intensity and an enduring concern with human suffering, survival and the consequences of war.

Born in Hiroshima Prefecture, Shindo was profoundly influenced by the experiences of wartime Japan and the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. His early masterpiece, Children of Hiroshima (1952), remains an important work of postwar Japanese cinema, confronting the human consequences of the bombing through an intimate and deeply compassionate narrative.

His subsequent films demonstrated remarkable artistic versatility, including The Naked Island (1960), an extraordinary near-dialogue-free portrait of rural hardship, and Onibaba (鬼婆, 1964), one of the most celebrated achievements in Japanese horror cinema.

Set during a period of civil conflict in medieval Japan, Onibaba combines elements of folklore, psychological horror and social commentary. Its haunting imagery, extraordinary cinematography and unsettling atmosphere have established it as a defining work of Japanese cinema.
