This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster printed in 1980 for Astro Boy (鉄腕アトム), the beloved creation of Osamu Tezuka. Issued for the release of the feature-length anime film Astro Boy: The Greatest Robot in the World (地球防衛隊), this poster celebrates one of the most iconic and influential characters in Japanese popular culture.
Film background
Astro Boy, known in Japan as Tetsuwan Atom (Mighty Atom), first appeared in manga form in 1952 and later in Japan’s pioneering TV anime series in 1963. Widely regarded as the “father of modern manga,” Tezuka created Astro Boy as a childlike robot with human emotions who fights for justice and peace. The 1980 anime revival brought Astro Boy back to Japanese audiences in full color, introducing a new generation to the character while solidifying his global legacy. The 1980 feature film continued the storylines of the reboot series, including encounters with powerful robot adversaries and themes of humanity, science, and morality.
Poster design
The Japanese promotional poster features Astro Boy in flight, his rocket boots blazing as he soars heroically across the composition. Supporting scenes from the film appear in inset panels at the top left, reinforcing the story’s action and adventure. Bold red kanji for “鉄腕アトム” anchor the lower field, accompanied by bright yellow taglines proclaiming Astro as “our hero.” The clean, colorful design reflects the optimism and charm that made Astro Boy a national symbol of anime culture.
