“Madadayo” (まあだだよ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1993, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O57
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1993 for the first release of Madadayo (まあだだよ), directed by Akira Kurosawa. The film was Kurosawa’s final feature, released when he was 83 years old, and serves as a poignant farewell piece in his long, celebrated career.
Madadayo tells the story of Professor Uchida Hyakken, a writer and academic in postwar Japan, whose students honor him annually on his birthday with the phrase “Mada dayo!” (“Not yet!”). The phrase becomes a metaphor for resilience, gratitude, and Kurosawa’s own reflections on mortality and legacy.
Poster design
The striking design features the back of an elderly man’s head, silver hair neatly combed, as he gazes into a field of abstract, colorful forms. Minimalist yet symbolic, the composition reflects the film’s meditative themes of memory, aging, and the quiet beauty of life. The bold Japanese title 「まあだだよ」 anchors the base alongside Kurosawa’s credit, while a poetic tagline on the right margin reads:
「今、忘れられているとても大切なものが、ここにある。」
(“Here lies something very important that is being forgotten today.”)
