“Madadayo” (まあだだよ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1993, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O58

Sale price $100.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1993 for the first theatrical release of Madadayo (まあだだよ), the final film directed by Akira Kurosawa. Released when Kurosawa was 83, it stands as a deeply personal and reflective farewell work, closing out the legendary director’s career with a meditation on aging, memory, and resilience.

Based on the life of author Uchida Hyakken, the film follows his postwar years as his students honor him annually with the phrase “Mada dayo” (“Not yet!”)—a humorous and life-affirming assertion of his will to live and cherish each passing year.

Poster Design

This variant poster presents an evocative image of Uchida and his wife framed in the doorway of their rustic snow-covered home. The composition is intimate and human, with the weathered wooden planks contrasting against the bold white calligraphy of the film’s title 「まあだだよ」. The serene domestic setting underscores Kurosawa’s late style: contemplative, poetic, and filled with a sense of warmth and gratitude for life’s fleeting beauty.
