We believe this poster has perhaps never surfaced in any major auction, making it one of the rarest Japanese Disney posters in existence. It’s not only an exceptional find — it may be one of only a handful that still survive today. This original Japanese poster for the first release of Dumbo, printed in 1954, features one of the most charming and distinctive designs ever created for the beloved Disney classic.
Now over 71 years old, the poster remains in mint condition. We sent it from Tokyo to California, where it was expertly linen-backed by one of the top conservation studios in the world. Their work ensures this piece will be preserved for future generations.
This treasure was sourced by Japan Poster Shop from a trusted contact near Osaka. It was part of a cache of rare posters that had been meticulously stored in the warehouse of a former cinema owner, whose business closed in the 1980s during the rise of home video.
Acquiring this piece is not only a chance to own a rare and beautiful artifact of animation history — it’s a strong investment. When collecting Japanese posters, the finest examples always command the strongest long-term value. This is one of the best surviving specimens of this iconic title.
Dumbo was Disney’s fourth animated feature and its most financially successful release of the 1940s. The film’s legacy was further cemented by Tim Burton’s live-action adaptation in 2019.
