This is an original Japanese poster, printed in 1954 for the first-ever release of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. This particular example is the extremely rare “regional” (chihōban) style, distributed for use in rural cinemas across Japan. Posters of this type were printed in smaller quantities and are significantly harder to find today — especially in such exceptional condition.
Now over 70 years old, this poster represents a cornerstone of Japanese cinema history. Seven Samurai is widely considered the most important Japanese film ever made and one of the greatest films in world cinema. Directed by Akira Kurosawa, the film introduced storytelling techniques that have influenced generations of filmmakers, from George Lucas and Steven Spielberg to Quentin Tarantino.
Country-of-origin posters for Seven Samurai have long been coveted by collectors, and this chihōban variant is among the rarest formats in existence. Opportunities to acquire a piece of this significance — in this condition — are extraordinarily rare.
We sent this poster from Tokyo to California to be professionally conservation linen-backed by one of the leading archival teams in the world. Their best-in-class restoration ensures this historic piece will be preserved for generations to come.
