Original Japanese Takao Okawara Movie Posters

Takao Okawara (大河原孝夫, born 1949) is a Japanese film director best known for his major contribution to the Heisei-era Godzilla series, directing some of the most commercially successful and recognisable entries in the franchise. His work helped establish the visual identity of Japanese kaiju cinema during the 1990s.

Joining Toho in 1973, Okawara worked on productions including Akira Kurosawa’s Kagemusha (1980) and The Return of Godzilla (1984) before making his feature directorial debut with Reiko, the Psyche Resurrected (1991). He subsequently directed Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992), Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993), Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995) and Godzilla 2000: Millennium (1999), among other notable productions.
