This is an original Japanese poster printed in 2013 for the release of John Cassavetes Retrospective.
John Cassavetes is known as the "father of independent film" and is a one-of-a-kind film director revered by world-renowned masters such as Jean-Luc Godard, Martin Scorsese, Wim Wenders, and Jim Jarmusch. In opposition to Hollywood's commercialism, he produced films with his best partner in both public and private life, actress Gena Rowlands, and other trusted colleagues, under the belief of "shooting what I want to shoot," pouring the money he earned from his acting career into them, and made the potential of independent film known.
This retrospective will screen six of the most important works from the 11 films left behind by Cassavetes, who passed away at the age of 59 in 1989. The event was made possible by the successful reacquisition of the screening rights, but it also comes at a time that could be considered a tribute to Al Ruban, who worked alongside Cassavetes as cinematographer and producer, who passed away in 2022.
