Film background
Released theatrically in 1997, Princess Mononoke marked a turning point for Studio Ghibli, becoming the highest-grossing Japanese film of its time until Spirited Away (2001). A sweeping historical fantasy, it follows Ashitaka, a young warrior cursed by a demon, who becomes entangled in the conflict between humans exploiting the forest for resources and the animal gods defending their land. With San (the titular “Princess Mononoke”) and the wolf goddess Moro as central figures, the film is celebrated for its environmental themes, rich mythology, and groundbreaking animation. Internationally distributed by Miramax, it brought Ghibli to worldwide acclaim.
Poster design
This DVD promotional poster features San astride her white wolf companion, surrounded by the eerie yet enchanting kodama spirits in a lush, painterly forest backdrop. The design captures Miyazaki’s ecological themes and the mystical atmosphere of the film. The bold red Japanese title 「もののけ姫」 is placed at the lower left, with DVD distributor details below, while the ©1997 Studio Ghibli credit appears in the lower corner. The imagery is instantly recognizable to fans of both Ghibli and global animation.
