Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese B3 promotional poster issued in the 1970s by Columbia Records to advertise their Animation Records line, highlighting music releases tied to some of the most iconic anime of the era. These promotional posters were distributed in limited quantities to record stores and were never made available for retail sale, making them exceptionally rare survivors today.

Background
The 1970s saw a golden age of Japanese television anime, with groundbreaking titles that shaped the medium for decades to come. Columbia Records, one of the leading publishers of anime soundtracks and theme songs, commissioned colorful promotional posters to cross-market their record releases. This piece brings together several of the era’s most influential series:

  • Astro Boy (鉄腕アトム) by Osamu Tezuka

  • Ribbon Knight (リボンの騎士)

  • Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (科学忍者隊ガッチャマン) by Tatsunoko Productions

  • Mazinger Z (マジンガーZ) by Go Nagai

  • Space Battleship Yamato (宇宙戦艦ヤマト) by Leiji Matsumoto

Each series was a milestone in anime history, and Columbia’s records played a key role in popularizing their unforgettable music.

Poster design
The poster presents a vivid montage: Ken the Eagle from Gatchaman dominates the foreground in full heroic pose, backed by the iconic Space Battleship Yamato soaring through space. Insets feature Tezuka’s beloved Astro Boy and Ribbon Knight, alongside a portrait of Mazinger Z’s mighty robot. The bold “Columbia Animation Records” branding at the bottom anchors the layout, making it a striking blend of marketing and pop-culture art.
