“The Godfather” (ゴッドファーザー), Original Japanese B2 Movie Poster 1972, B2 Size (c. 51 × 73 cm) ZA499
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the first Japanese release of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather, the 1972 crime saga based on Mario Puzo’s novel and starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan and Robert Duvall.
Film background
Spanning the late 1940s and early 1950s, the film chronicles the Corleone crime family’s struggle to maintain power in New York while transitioning leadership from aging patriarch Vito Corleone to his reluctant son Michael. Fusing operatic family drama with gangster‑film grit, The Godfather reshaped American cinema, winning the Academy Award for Best Picture and launching two sequels that together form one of film history’s defining trilogies.
Poster design
The Japanese B2 retains the stark elegance of the classic U.S. one‑sheet while adding local flavour. A black field dominates the sheet, with Vito Corleone’s profile picked out in pale light along the left edge. A vertical strip of small colour stills—weddings, hits, family gatherings—runs down the centre, offering glimpses of the film’s key moments. To the right floats the iconic puppet‑string logo and the bold white “The Godfather” title, with the Japanese katakana “ゴッドファーザー” tucked underneath. A final still at the bottom shows Michael in a moment of intimacy, hinting at the human cost beneath the crime story.
