"Whisper of the Heart", Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1995, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O300
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1995 for Studio Ghibli’s coming-of-age romance Whisper of the Heart (耳をすませば). Directed by Yoshifumi Kondō from a screenplay by Hayao Miyazaki (adapting Aoi Hiiragi’s manga), the film pairs tender first love with the discovery of one’s creative voice. With music by Yuji Nomi and distribution by Toho, it remains a touchstone of 1990s Ghibli—subtle, humane, and deeply rewatchable.
Film background
Junior-high bookworm Shizuku meets violin-maker-to-be Seiji and begins testing her own talent as a writer—guided in daydreams by the elegant cat figurine Baron Humbert von Gikkingen. The film’s everyday Tama-Hills setting, lyrical pacing, and bittersweet finale have earned it enduring affection in Japan and abroad.
Poster design
An airy, dream-bright composition: Shizuku in a red dress and the Baron float across a fantastical sky of stacked stone towers and drifting clouds, while the sunlit Tama cityscape glitters below in painterly detail. The vertical yellow tagline at left reads 「好きなひとができました。」 (“I’ve fallen for someone.”). The large scarlet brush title 「耳をすませば」 runs down the right side. Footer marks include Spectral Recording DOLBY STEREO DIGITAL, Toho/Ghibli rights, and the film-centenary campaign seal, confirming first-issue provenance.
