“Comandante” (コマンダンテ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 2003, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O558

Sale price $115.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 2003 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Comandante, Oliver Stone’s documentary portrait of Fidel Castro.

Film background

Comandante is built around an extended conversation between director Oliver Stone and Cuban leader Fidel Castro, filmed in Havana. Over the course of three days, Castro speaks candidly about the Cuban Revolution, his clashes with the United States, domestic policy and his own life story. The film sparked debate on its release for its access and tone, and it remains an intriguing document of both Castro and Stone’s interest in political figures and power.

Poster design

The Japanese B2 design is minimalist and bold. A huge close‑up of Castro’s face dominates the left side of the poster, his hand pressed to his brow in a moment of thought. Against a cool blue background, the title COMANDANTE slashes across the bottom in distressed white letters, anchored by a large red star that echoes political iconography. Japanese text is kept to a minimum, allowing the image to have real impact.

Rarity and condition

As a subtitled political documentary, Comandante received a far smaller distribution in Japan than mainstream Hollywood fare, and posters were printed accordingly in limited numbers. Surviving examples in high grade are not easy to track down and appeal to collectors of Stone’s work, Cuban history, or political documentary.
