“Dersu Uzala” (デルス・ウザーラ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1975, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) I294
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1975 for the first release of Dersu Uzala (デルス・ウザーラ), directed by Akira Kurosawa and produced through a Japanese-Soviet co-production between Mosfilm and Toho/Herald Films.
Dersu Uzala was Kurosawa’s first non-Japanese language film and won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1976. It tells the story of the friendship between Russian explorer Vladimir Arsenyev and the titular Dersu Uzala, a nomadic hunter who guides him through the Siberian wilderness.
Poster design
The poster’s dramatic design captures the essence of Kurosawa’s wilderness epic: silhouetted figures journey across a frozen tundra under a vast, fiery sunset sky. The bold silver Japanese title lettering 「デルス・ウザーラ」 dominates the header, with the English subtitle “A Film of Akira Kurosawa – Dersu Uzala” anchoring the midsection. The imagery emphasizes both the grandeur of nature and the human struggle within it — central themes of Kurosawa’s masterpiece.
