This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1969 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed!, the classic Hammer Horror film directed by Terence Fisher and starring Peter Cushing, Veronica Carlson, Simon Ward, and Freddie Jones. Released in Japan under the sensational title フランケンシュタイン 恐怖の生体実験 (“Frankenstein: Fearful Biological Experiment”), this is a superb and highly dramatic piece of late-1960s Japanese horror paper.

Film background
Produced by Hammer Film Productions, Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed! is the fifth entry in Hammer’s Frankenstein cycle and one of the strongest and darkest of the series. Here, Baron Victor Frankenstein, played by Peter Cushing, is portrayed as colder and more ruthless than ever, willing to resort to kidnapping, coercion, and grotesque surgery in pursuit of forbidden medical knowledge. That harder, more merciless edge gives the film much of its power, and it remains one of the most admired later Hammer Gothic horrors.

Poster design
This Japanese poster is fantastically bold. The design combines a fractured, collage-like structure with vivid scenes of the Baron’s ruthless medical experiments, centring on Peter Cushing in the laboratory alongside the bandaged victim and the disturbing aftermath of his surgical obsession. Behind them looms a stark, graphic background image that gives the sheet a wonderfully uneasy, almost hallucinatory quality. The huge blood-red Japanese title 恐怖の生体実験 crashes across the bottom with tremendous impact, while the blue フランケンシュタイン panel above anchors the composition beautifully. It is exactly the sort of theatrical, lurid, highly displayable Japanese Hammer poster that collectors seek out.
