Sale price $28,500.00

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE / 007 危機一発
Japan (United Artists), 1964
Original first-release Japanese theatrical billboard poster (B0)
Colour-printed poster on paper, professionally linen-backed by Fourth Cone Restoration
A genuine “holy grail” of James Bond paper: the Japanese B0 billboard for From Russia with Love—a format whose scale, scarcity, and survival rate place it among the rarest Bond posters ever produced. Early Japanese Bond billboards are already legendary for near-total disappearance; this title is considered by many specialists to sit at the absolute top of that category.

No one can state an exact surviving number with certainty, but experienced Bond-poster experts generally agree the number is likely under five—meaning this is “less than a handful” rarity at a truly museum level.
A monumental, institutional-grade Bond billboard—almost never seen, and virtually never offered.

Rarity and Market Context

The Japanese B0 billboard factor: posters designed not to survive

Japanese B0 billboards were created for high-impact theatrical display—large, attention-commanding sheets intended for short-term use. In practice, they were frequently pasted, replaced, damaged, or discarded, making survival rates exceptionally low even for major titles.

For early James Bond releases in Japan, the calculus becomes extreme: very few were printed, fewer were saved, and almost none remain in collectible condition.

Public record visibility: essentially absent

To the best of our knowledge, these early Japanese Bond B0 billboards do not appear in documented public sales history in any consistent way. The only references we can locate tend to be printed reference images and period photographs of the posters on display—exactly what you would expect for material that almost never survives long enough to reach the collector market.

A once-in-a-lifetime collecting tier

Over the years we have handled many ultra-rare posters; individually, these early Japanese B0 Bond billboards are among the rarest posters we have ever had in our gallery by a mile. As part of a three-poster set (including Dr. No, believed to be the only known surviving example of that billboard), the opportunity becomes once-in-a-lifetime for a serious Bond collector or museum.

The Film: Why From Russia with Love Matters

The Bond template solidifies

From Russia with Love is the second Eon/Connery Bond film and is widely regarded as one of the tightest, most influential entries in the entire series—leaner, more espionage-driven, and foundational to the franchise’s Cold War identity.

A cornerstone Connery-era classic

For many collectors and critics, this title sits in the top tier of Bond films—an early, definitive statement of the character’s cinematic persona and the franchise’s global style language.

The B0 Billboard Format

This is not simply “a Japanese poster.” It is the Japanese billboard format, built for theatrical impact:

  • Massive scale (110 × 160 cm): a true wall-dominating display piece

  • Extremely low survival rate: these were working advertising sheets, not keepsakes

  • Top-tier desirability: the format collectors talk about but almost never get the chance to own

In short: B0 changes everything—rarity, presence, and the level of acquisition.

Poster Design: One of the Most Iconic Japanese Bond Compositions

This design is an all-time classic of Japanese Bond advertising:

  • Clean white-field modernism that makes the imagery hit harder at distance

  • Connery front and center, rendered with commanding elegance and menace

  • Horizontal action panels stacked like film strips—an ingenious graphic device that sells multiple set pieces instantly

  • Helicopter explosion vignette and the “007” gun logos punctuating the composition with pure franchise branding

Japanese Bond posters are widely celebrated for their artwork, and this billboard is a prime example—bold, cinematic, and unmistakably of its era.
