“Magnolia” (マグノリア), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1999, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA469
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1999 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Magnolia (マグノリア), written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.
Film background
Magnolia is an ambitious, emotionally charged ensemble drama that interweaves the lives of multiple characters over the course of a single day in the San Fernando Valley. Anchored by a powerhouse cast including Tom Cruise, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy, John C. Reilly and Jason Robards, the film explores cycles of trauma, forgiveness and coincidence, all underscored by the music of Aimee Mann. Nominated for three Academy Awards, Magnolia is widely considered one of PTA’s defining works and a landmark of late‑1990s American cinema.
Poster design
The Japanese B2 artwork takes a more dreamlike approach than the familiar petal‑wheel international design. Against a vivid blue sky filled with soft, painterly clouds, the main characters float in layered portrait form around a single magnolia blossom at the centre of the image. The composition suggests that all of their stories orbit the same emotional core. The warm skin tones and soft lighting give the poster an almost ethereal feel, contrasted by the bold orange Japanese title “マグノリア” at the bottom, with the English “magnolia” lockup beneath. It’s a striking, less common variant that stands apart from other territories’ marketing.
Rarity and condition
Japanese posters for Magnolia were printed in modest quantities compared with mainstream blockbusters, and country‑specific art like this has become increasingly collectible among PTA fans and modern cinephiles.
