“Neon Genesis Evangelion: DEATH” (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン DEATH), Original Japanese Soundtrack Promotional Poster 1997, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) I132

Sale price $120.00

This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster issued in 1997 for the soundtrack release connected to Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth. It is not the standard theatrical film poster, but a striking country-of-origin music promotion sheet produced by King Records / Starchild for the release of the Evangelion: Death soundtrack.

Background

By 1997, Neon Genesis Evangelion had already become one of the most important anime franchises of its era, and Death & Rebirth marked the beginning of its transition from television phenomenon to theatrical event. This poster belongs to that crucial moment. It promotes the soundtrack album associated with Evangelion: Death, with music by Shirō Sagisu, and includes a printed note crediting the background music selection to Hideaki Anno.

For collectors, pieces like this are especially appealing because they sit slightly outside the better-known theatrical paper. They are part of the original 1997 Evangelion media rollout, but were produced for a more specific purpose and in smaller quantities.

Poster design

The design is minimal, severe, and unmistakably Evangelion. The poster is dominated by a high-contrast red-and-black field suggesting a ruined or blood-red landscape, with dark silhouetted forms at the edge of the composition. At upper right appears the stylised, inverted EVANGELION: DEATH title treatment, one of the most visually arresting typography treatments from the franchise’s 1990s graphic output.

Unlike character posters or more narrative campaign sheets, this design is almost abstract. That is exactly what gives it its power. It feels closer to experimental graphic design or album art than to a conventional anime poster, and it captures the bleak, apocalyptic mood that defines Evangelion at its darkest.

Why collectors prize it

Official 1997 Japanese promotional issue tied to the original Death & Rebirth era.

Music-related Evangelion paper is scarcer and less frequently seen than standard character or theatrical posters.

Exceptional graphic design, with a bold red-black palette and unusually austere composition.

A strong piece for collectors of early Evangelion, King Records / Starchild material, or 1990s Japanese anime design more broadly.

Condition

Very Good. Please review the photos—they show the exact poster for sale. The poster presents very strongly overall, with rich colour, deep blacks, and excellent display appeal. There is light age-related handling and minor surface and storage wear consistent with an authentic 1997 promotional poster, but nothing that detracts from the overall front presentation.

It is over 29 years old!

It is not a reproduction or a reprint.

Certificate of Authenticity included.
