This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1966 for the first release of Othello.

Othello is the 1965 British film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s tragedy, directed by Stuart Burge and produced by John Brabourne. The film stars Laurence Olivier—reprising his celebrated National Theatre role—as the Moorish general Othello, alongside Maggie Smith as Desdemona, Frank Finlay as Iago, and Joyce Redman as Emilia. Shot in a stylised, stage-inspired format, the picture preserves the National Theatre’s production, with Olivier’s performance earning Oscar® nominations for Best Actor as well as nods for Best Supporting Actor (Finlay) and Actress (Smith, Redman). While later criticised for the era’s makeup conventions, the film remains a landmark record of mid-20th-century Shakespearean theatre on screen.
