“Teorema” (テオレマ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1970 (film 1968), B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) D208

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the first Japanese cinema release of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Teorema (テオレマ), one of the defining works of late-1960s European art cinema. The film was produced in 1968, and it first opened theatrically in Japan on 11 April 1970, distributed domestically by 東和 / Towa.

Written and directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini, Teorema stars Terence Stamp, Silvana Mangano, Massimo Girotti, Anne Wiazemsky and Laura Betti. A mysterious young visitor enters the home of a wealthy Milanese industrial family, forms an intimate relationship with each member of the household, and then abruptly departs—leaving the family spiritually and psychologically transformed. The film received the OCIC Award at the 1968 Venice Film Festival, while Laura Betti received the festival’s Best Actress award.

Poster design
An extraordinary example of Japanese late-1960s / early-1970s arthouse poster design, built around a surreal photographic collage rather than conventional star portraiture. A reclining nude female figure stretches dramatically across the upper half, while a monochrome mirrored figure occupies the centre beneath her. Between them, an ornate eye-shaped photographic montage contains fragmented portraits from the film, including Terence Stamp, producing an appropriately dreamlike and psychologically charged composition.

The stark pale background and skeletal trees are punctuated by the extraordinary Japanese title テオレマ, rendered in loose, almost hand-painted green, violet, black and blue characters. The result is elegant, provocative and unmistakably of its era.

The original Japanese advertising copy also foregrounds Pasolini’s controversial reputation and the film’s 1968 Venice Film Festival recognition, while the lower margin retains the original Towa distribution mark.

It is over 56 years old!

Condition
Very Good+. The poster was originally folded and has subsequently been stored flat, with the original horizontal and vertical fold lines remaining visible. There is general light handling and age-related creasing, some minor edge and corner wear, a small piece of old tape at the upper edge on the verso, and period handwritten notation on the reverse (in Japanese the writing says "Teorema"). The colours and principal artwork remain strong, and there is no major paper loss affecting the central design. Once framed, it will display excellently.
