"The Thing" (遊星からの物体X), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1982, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O466
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1982 for John Carpenter’s The Thing—Carpenter’s paranoid, shape-shifting sci-fi horror opus, now regarded as one of the greatest genre films of all time. Ennio Morricone’s minimalist pulse and Rob Bottin’s groundbreaking practical effects helped define modern body horror.
Design
A cracked, volcanic core erupts at center with sinuous orange tendrils snaking outward; a helicopter and the Antarctic base silhouette establish scale against a frosted planetary arc. Along the bottom, stark black-and-white character line-up frames the catastrophe. The titling marries the English mark (“THE THING”) with the iconically bold Japanese title 「遊星からの物体X」 in blood-red brushwork—impactful and unmistakably Japanese.
Cult status / film notes
Dismissed on initial release, the film’s bleak worldview and virtuoso creature work have earned towering cult stature, influencing everything from isolation thrillers to sci-fi gaming and FX craft for decades.
