This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1975 for the first Japanese theatrical release of The Godfather Part II, Francis Ford Coppola’s monumental sequel to one of the defining films in American cinema. Released in Japan the year after its US debut, this poster captures the film’s grave, dynastic grandeur in a stark and highly effective design, combining the Corleone world’s darkness, ritual, and violence with the prestige aura that surrounded the picture internationally.

Film background
Originally released in 1974, The Godfather Part II is one of the rare sequels widely regarded as fully equal to—if not by some measures greater than—its predecessor. Coppola expanded Mario Puzo’s gangster saga in two directions at once: following Michael Corleone deeper into power, isolation, and moral collapse, while tracing the rise of young Vito Corleone in the old world and immigrant New York. Starring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, and John Cazale, the film won multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and remains one of the central achievements of 1970s cinema.

Poster design
A superbly moody Japanese design built around darkness, authority, and fragmented narrative tension. The upper field is dominated by a stark monochrome image of Michael Corleone seated in shadow, immediately establishing the film’s atmosphere of cold power and distance. Beneath that, a vertical block of red Japanese text cuts through the black ground, while a series of colour stills introduce key emotional and dramatic moments: family, betrayal, violence, and the old-world / new-world sweep of the story. The bold gold-and-red ゴッドファーザー PART II title at the bottom gives the poster tremendous wall presence. It is an especially attractive Japanese design for the film—less cluttered than many international posters, and far more severe and elegant.
