“The Goonies” (グーニーズ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1985, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm), Artwork by Drew Struzan H259 B
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1985 for the first Japanese theatrical release of The Goonies (グーニーズ), the beloved adventure film produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Richard Donner. The artwork is by legendary movie‑poster illustrator Drew Struzan.
Film background
The Goonies follows a band of misfit kids from “the Goon Docks” who discover an old pirate map and set off to find One‑Eyed Willy’s hidden treasure before greedy developers demolish their neighbourhood. Mixing booby‑trapped caverns, criminal Fratellis, and a deformed gentle giant named Sloth, the film became a touchstone of ’80s kids’ cinema and a perennial cult favourite.
Poster design
Struzan’s vertical composition is a masterclass in adventure illustration. The Goonies form a dangling human chain, hanging from rocky stalactites over an abyss, with Mikey at the top reaching for safety and the others clinging on below. The Japanese logo グーニーズ explodes in bold red across the lower centre, with the small English “The Goonies” nestled underneath. Warm, sepia‑orange tones evoke both treasure‑map parchment and torchlit caverns, while subtle skull and map motifs hide in the rock face. It’s one of the most iconic and collectible international designs for the film.
