This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for The Outsiders, Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 adaptation of S. E. Hinton’s classic young‑adult novel. The film stars C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Diane Lane, Tom Cruise and others—an extraordinary ensemble of then‑up‑and‑coming actors. 

Film background
Set in 1960s Tulsa, the story follows Ponyboy Curtis and his fellow “Greasers,” working‑class teens locked in a simmering feud with their wealthier rivals, the “Socs.” After a late‑night confrontation turns deadly, Ponyboy and sensitive friend Johnny go on the run, forcing the Greasers to confront loyalty, violence and the fragile nature of youth. Coppola’s film leans into heightened, almost mythic imagery while staying true to Hinton’s themes of class, brotherhood and the desire to “stay gold.” 

Poster design
The Japanese B2 emphasises the film’s star power and romantic melancholy. Across the top, FRANICS F. COPPOLA and THE OUTSIDERS are spelled out in large outlined letters, with small circular portraits of the key cast members tucked into and around the typography. The main image shows three Greasers—Ponyboy, Johnny and Dally—gazing in profile toward the right, bathed in a warm, dusty light that blends their faces into the orange sky. A freight train roars toward the viewer along the bottom edge, tying the rural American setting to themes of escape. The bold white Japanese title 「アウトサイダー」 sits over the locomotive, accented with red and blue copy and a small inset of Coppola himself.
