This is an original Japanese movie poster printed in 1969 for the very first release of Otoko wa Tsurai Yo, the debut entry in Shochiku’s beloved long-running comedy series starring Kiyoshi Atsumi as the wandering salesman “Tora-san” and directed by Yoji Yamada.
Premiering on 27 August 1969, the film became an instant cultural phenomenon, spawning 48 sequels over the next quarter-century and cementing Tora-san as one of Japan’s most iconic cinematic characters. This inaugural chapter finds the well-meaning drifter returning to his shitamachi roots in Shibamata, Tokyo, only to upend his family’s quiet life—and fall hopelessly in love with the local temple maiden, portrayed by Chieko Baisho.
