“The Tales of Beatrix Potter”, Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1978, B2 Size (51 x 73cm) ZA1122

Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical release poster printed in 1978 for the Japanese cinema release of The Tales of Beatrix Potter (ピーターラビットとなかまたち / Peter Rabbit and Friends), the charming British ballet film based on the beloved animal stories of Beatrix Potter. The film was directed by Reginald Mills and features performers from The Royal Ballet, with choreography by Sir Frederick Ashton and music by John Lanchbery.

Film background
Originally produced in Britain in 1971, The Tales of Beatrix Potter is a distinctive family fantasy that brings Potter’s famous characters to life through ballet rather than conventional animation or live-action dialogue. Set against idyllic English landscapes and accompanied by John Lanchbery’s graceful score, the film transforms classic stories such as Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Squirrel Nutkin, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, and others into a gentle, visually imaginative dance spectacle.

The Japanese release presented the film as a refined and family-friendly imported feature, appealing both to admirers of Beatrix Potter and to audiences interested in British culture, ballet, and children’s fantasy cinema. The poster also highlights its approval and recommendation by a number of educational and cultural bodies in Japan, underlining the film’s wholesome reputation and broad family appeal.

Poster design
This is a wonderfully elegant and unusual Japanese design, quite unlike more conventional Western film posters. The composition is built around a large, softly painted tree that spreads across the entire sheet, its branches serving as a stage for a delightful gathering of Potter’s characters in costume.

Among the figures visible are Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Pigling Bland, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, and other familiar animal characters, all rendered in the distinctive costume style used in the film by the dancers of The Royal Ballet. The arrangement is airy, whimsical, and spacious, with the cream-coloured background giving the whole poster a refined, storybook quality.

At the centre sits the large Japanese title ピーターラビットとなかまたち, drawn in a playful, hand-rendered style with leaf motifs worked into the lettering. Beneath it appears the English subtitle: “TALES OF BEATRIX POTTER with DANCERS OF THE ROYAL BALLET.” The typography and imagery together give the poster a highly decorative and distinctly period feel, making it especially attractive for collectors of vintage family cinema, children’s illustration, and unusual British film material issued in Japan.

The lower section contains the production credits, including EMI, and notes the film as a feature-length colour fantasy film, issued in Japan in a narrated version. The educational recommendation text at upper left is an especially interesting period detail and adds further documentary value to the piece.

Rarity
This poster is very rare. Original Japanese posters for British family films of this period are scarce, and material connected with Beatrix Potter is particularly sought after. Pre-1980 Japanese posters for imported children’s and fantasy titles were often printed in smaller numbers and were seldom preserved carefully, making surviving examples difficult to find today.

This piece is especially appealing for collectors of Beatrix Potter, Royal Ballet, British cinema, and vintage Japanese poster design.
