“Pokémon – Pikachu & Friends” Original 1998 Japanese Promotional Poster, Banpresto Character Poster Series, B2 Size (c. 51 × 73 cm), Lot No. 981211 – Not for Sale
First aired in 1997, Pocket Monsters (Pokémon) quickly became a cultural phenomenon in Japan and worldwide. By 1998 the TV anime, Game Boy titles (Red/Green/Blue/Pikachu), and card game were at peak popularity, prompting Banpresto to launch a limited “Character Poster” prize line for arcades and toy stores.
Set against a sun-lit forest meadow, five fan-favourite starters share centre stage:
-
Pikachu and Togepi laughing beside a tree trunk
-
Squirtle pressing its ears in comic frustration
-
Psyduck foregrounded with trademark wide-eyed confusion
-
Bulbasaur peering in from the right, sweat drop glistening
Printed in rich offset colour, the artwork mirrors the hand-drawn cel style of the early TV series. The Banpresto “キャラポスター” logo, Lot No. 981211, and “©BANPRESTO 1998 MADE IN JAPAN” footer confirm its first-issue provenance.
It is over 27 years old!
