"Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" (風の谷のナウシカ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1984, Very Rare, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) I231

Sale price $400.00

There are many recent reproductions of this poster officially made by Studio Ghibli – this is not one and is an original first release!

This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1984 by Toei(東映) for the first theatrical release of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (風の谷のナウシカ), written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, animated by Topcraft, and scored by Joe Hisaishi. Although released before Studio Ghibli was officially founded (1985), the film is widely regarded as the work that led directly to Ghibli’s creation and is considered part of the studio canon.

Printed for the film’s initial run, this scarce original B2(半裁)is coveted by Ghibli collectors and anime-design enthusiasts alike — a landmark piece from the dawn of modern Japanese animation cinema.

Why this example is extraordinary (rarity & market)

  • Early, country-of-origin poster for Nausicaä, among the most historically important Japanese animation posters.

  • Highly sought after by collectors, as original 1984 issues are far scarcer than later reproductions.

  • Represents the birth of Miyazaki and Hisaishi’s iconic collaboration and the spark that catalyzed Studio Ghibli.

Poster design

A timeless, contemplative composition: Nausicaä stands calmly atop an Ohmu (王蟲), gazing out over the horizon, the breeze catching her hair. The vertical copy reads: 「木々を愛で 虫と語り 風をまねく鳥の人…」 (“One who loves the trees, speaks with insects, and summons the wind like a bird…”). The vivid blue and orange gradient sky contrasts with her soft silhouette, while the bold red logotype 「風の谷のナウシカ」 anchors the base. A design of quiet strength and enduring beauty, unique to Japan’s first release.
