“Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” (風の谷のナウシカ), Original Release Japanese Promotional Poster 1984, Very Rare, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O53

Sale price $300.00

This is an original Japanese promotional poster printed in 1984 by Tokuma Shoten / Hakuhodo (NP-503 C) for the first theatrical release of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (風の谷のナウシカ), written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, animated by Topcraft, and scored by Joe Hisaishi.

Released before Studio Ghibli was officially founded in 1985, Nausicaä is regarded as the film that directly led to Ghibli’s creation and is considered part of the studio canon.

Printed for the film’s initial run, this scarce B2 poster is highly coveted by Ghibli collectors and anime-design enthusiasts alike — a landmark piece from the dawn of modern Japanese animation cinema.

Why this example is extraordinary (rarity & market)

  • Authentic 1984 first-release promotional issue, not a later Studio Ghibli reproduction.

  • Part of the Tokuma Shoten / Hakuhodo promotional line (NP-503 C), printed in far smaller numbers than the standard Toei-distributed theatrical posters.

  • Historically important as the film that launched the legendary Miyazaki / Hisaishi collaboration and catalyzed Studio Ghibli’s formation.

This artwork presents a rare, character-driven portrait of Nausicaä in her blue attire, accompanied by her fox-squirrel companion Teto. At the bottom, the English-language subtitle block provides an allegorical description of the film:

“Nausicaä is an allegorical tale which projects the contemporary problems of ecology into an era one thousand years after the near destruction of the Earth through man’s reckless misuse of his environment. It is the simple tale of a young girl who is forced to fight a momentous battle against those who would wantonly destroy her beloved home, the Valley of Wind.”

This poetic text, paired with the minimalist design, makes the NP-503 C variant especially desirable among collectors.
