“Godzilla vs. Biollante” (ゴジラVSビオランテ / Godzilla vs. Biollante), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1989, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) P221
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1989 for the first release of Godzilla vs. Biollante, one of the most beloved and visually distinctive entries in the entire Godzilla series. Issued for the film’s original Japanese cinema run, this poster captures the darker, more experimental spirit of the late-1980s Heisei era: a Godzilla film driven not just by destruction, but by biotechnology, mutation, and one of the franchise’s most extraordinary monster designs.
Film background
Released in 1989, Godzilla vs. Biollante was the follow-up to The Return of Godzilla and helped define the new direction of the Heisei series. Directed by Kazuki Ōmori, the film pits Godzilla against Biollante, a grotesque and tragic hybrid organism born from plant tissue, human cells, and Godzilla’s own DNA. That premise gave the film an unusually rich science-fiction and body-horror edge, setting it apart from more straightforward kaijū battle entries. Over time it has become a major fan favourite, admired for its serious tone, imaginative concepts, and the sheer originality of Biollante herself—still one of the strangest and most unforgettable opponents Godzilla has ever faced.
Poster design
A spectacular and highly collectible Japanese design built around pure monster impact. Rather than cluttering the sheet with cast montage or city destruction, the composition goes straight for the throat: Godzilla is shown locked within the monstrous jaws and tendrils of Biollante, whose enormous carnivorous maw dominates the image in blazing reds, sickly greens, and deep volcanic blacks. The black background makes the creatures feel as though they are emerging from pure darkness, while the neon-like pink and red title ゴジラVSビオランテ at the lower left gives the poster tremendous graphic punch. It is a superb example of late-Shōwa / early-Heisei kaijū poster art—dark, aggressive, and instantly iconic on the wall.
