Film background
Released in 1977, House is one of the most famous cult films in Japanese cinema—an unclassifiable collision of horror, comedy, pop-art editing, and experimental visual effects. A group of schoolgirls travel to a rural house that becomes a nightmare machine, consuming them through a series of absurd, dreamlike set-pieces. Over time, the film’s fearless style—hyper-saturated colour, surreal compositing, and near-musical rhythm—has made it a global cult favourite and a defining reference point for Japanese genre cinema.

Poster design
One of the most iconic and recognisable Japanese posters of the 1970s—instantly displayable and often cited as a “holy grail” design for collectors. The composition is a surreal collage rendered in violently beautiful colour: a lonely mansion sits in the distance beneath an apocalyptic sky, while a white cat perches like an omen at centre. The enormous HOUSE title is painted in red with a lurid green outline—part children’s book lettering, part horror graffiti—anchoring the sheet with unforgettable impact. Along the bottom, a strip of cast portraits reads like a roll call of victims and witnesses, while the overall palette (toxic greens, blood oranges, and deep blacks) perfectly mirrors the film’s psychedelic, candy-coloured terror. Even among Japanese horror posters, this one stands out as a genuine design icon.
