“Modern Times” (チャップリンのモダン・タイムス), Original First Release Japanese Movie Poster 1954, Very Rare, Speed Poster / Press-Sheet (25 × 51 cm) O799
This is an original Japanese speed poster / press-sheet printed in 1954 for the first Japanese release of Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times (チャップリンのモダン・タイムス), a United States comedy masterpiece starring Charlie Chaplin with Paulette Goddard (and Henry Bergman).
Film background
Released in 1936, Modern Times is one of the defining works of world cinema—Chaplin’s final major appearance as the Little Tramp and a landmark blend of physical comedy and social critique. Set against the mechanised rhythms of the industrial age, the film follows the Tramp as he is crushed—literally and psychologically—by factory life, unemployment, and institutional control, while finding moments of tenderness and hope alongside the Gamin (Paulette Goddard). It remains one of Chaplin’s most influential films and a cornerstone of screen comedy.
Poster design
A bold, graphic Japanese layout dominated by oversized, pop-style title typography 「チャップリンのモダン・タイムス」 across the upper field. The central image shows Chaplin and Paulette Goddard in a tense, playful corner moment, while the left column presents a filmstrip sequence of Chaplin’s famous “feeding machine” gag—one of the film’s most iconic satirical set-pieces. The lower half reads like an editorial press layout, packed with Japanese text and small Chaplin illustrations, capturing the period style of 1950s Japanese film promotion.
