“Muriel” (ミュリエル), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1974, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O793
This is an original Japanese B2 movie poster printed in 1974 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Muriel (Muriel, ou le temps d’un retour), a France art-house drama directed by Alain Resnais, starring Delphine Seyrig, Jean-Pierre Kérien, and Nita Klein.
Film background
First released in 1963, Muriel is a key work of post-war French modernist cinema—an emotionally fractured portrait of memory, guilt, and repression set in the shadow of the Algerian War. Resnais structures the film around interruption and recurrence, as ordinary domestic life becomes a site of unresolved trauma. It remains one of his most challenging and influential films, celebrated for its editing, psychological complexity, and Delphine Seyrig’s haunting screen presence.
Poster design
A superbly composed Japanese B2 that mirrors the film’s splintered memory structure through layered imagery. A tense close-up of a woman clutching a telephone dominates the foreground—intimate, anxious, immediate—while the background collages in cooler, detached scenes: a woman seated on a bed, a shadowed male figure in a doorway, and a distant landscape vignette that hints at past and elsewhere. The jagged orange title 「ミュリエル」 cuts across the centre like a slash, paired with Resnais’ director credit, giving the sheet a distinctly 1970s Japanese art-house “reissue/first-run” sophistication. Minimal, psychological, and extremely displayable.
