“The Evil Dead” (死霊のはらわた), Original Japanese Release Movie Poster 1985, Style A, Rare, B1 Size (c.71 × 103 cm)
This is an original Japanese B1 theatrical poster for the first Japanese release of The Evil Dead (死霊のはらわた), written and directed by Sam Raimi and produced by Robert G. Tapert, starring Bruce Campbell. While the film was produced/released in 1981, it received its first Japanese theatrical release on February 23, 1985 (distributed in Japan by Herald), and this poster is from that original Japanese release campaign.
Film background
Released in 1981, The Evil Dead is one of the most influential independent horror films ever made—an explosion of low-budget invention that helped redefine modern horror grammar with its aggressive camerawork, relentless escalation, and unforgettable “cabin in the woods” nightmare setup. The film’s reputation grew into true cult legend worldwide, launching a franchise and establishing Raimi and Campbell as enduring genre icons.
Poster design
This is the coveted Japanese Style A design—graphic, aggressive, and unmistakably early-’80s. A central image of Ash (Bruce Campbell)—soaked in blood—raises a chainsaw overhead in a moment of pure panic-energy, with a terrified figure behind him. The stark white field is punctured by monstrous reaching hands clawing inward from both sides, while a demonic face emerges from the lower-right like a jump-scare embedded in the layout. The title 「死霊のはらわた」 is rendered in huge brush-stroke red lettering—more like violent calligraphy than typography—creating an extraordinary wall piece that feels as immediate as the film itself. The vertical copy strip on the right hypes the film as a “NO.1” shock-horror sensation, while the award callouts in the upper-left complete a poster that is pure exploitation-era Japanese marketing brilliance.

Excellent, especially for an original theatrical B1 of this era. This poster was previously displayed and shows a few tiny pinholes along the margins (visible in the photos) with only minimal additional handling wear. Please review the photos—they show the exact poster for sale.
