“Marilyn” (マリリン・モンローの世界), Original Release Japanese Press-Sheet / Speed Poster 1963, Size (c. 26 × 73 cm) O742
This is an original Japanese press-sheet / speed poster printed in 1963 for the first Japanese release of Marilyn (マリリン・モンローの世界), a 20th Century Fox documentary portrait of Marilyn Monroe, narrated by Rock Hudson. These long, narrow “speed” formats were produced for fast in-theatre and storefront promotion, and are far scarcer than standard one-sheets.
Film background
Released in 1963, Marilyn is a documentary look at Monroe’s screen image and public mythology, issued at a moment when her global fame was intensifying into legend. Marketed in Japan as a definitive “Marilyn world” retrospective, it reflects the early-1960s studio approach to star legacy—glamour, iconography, and curated narrative presented for international audiences.
Poster design
A wonderful two-sided piece that reads like a mini-exhibition of Monroe imagery. The front is pure, high-impact glamour: a full-length Monroe pin-up style pose in a vivid turquoise swimsuit, set against an expansive white field with the vertical red title 「マリリン・モンローの世界」 and 20th Century Fox mark—clean, modern, and immediately eye-catching at distance. The verso functions as an information-and-image panel: dense Japanese text copy for exhibitors, a lineup of Monroe poses (each captioned), and a grid of black-and-white stills that underline the documentary/retrospective positioning. As an object, it’s a perfect example of how Japanese cinemas sold Hollywood stardom in the early 1960s—bold on the front, editorial on the back.
