Original Japanese Seijun Suzuki Movie Posters

Seijun Suzuki (鈴木清順, 1923–2017) was one of the most distinctive and influential directors in Japanese cinema, celebrated for his radical visual style, surreal compositions, irreverent humour and extraordinary reinvention of the yakuza film. Working extensively for Nikkatsu during the 1950s and 1960s, Suzuki transformed commercial genre cinema into something unmistakably his own.

His most celebrated films include Tokyo Drifter (1966) and Branded to Kill (1967), starring Joe Shishido, alongside earlier crime and action productions such as Youth of the Beast (1963) and Gate of Flesh (1964). His increasingly experimental approach ultimately led to his dismissal from Nikkatsu following Branded to Kill, a film now regarded as a landmark of Japanese cult cinema.

Suzuki later returned to filmmaking with acclaimed works including Zigeunerweisen (1980), Kagero-za (1981) and Yumeji (1991), further establishing his reputation as one of Japan’s great cinematic stylists.

Japan Poster Shop’s collection brings together original Japanese Seijun Suzuki movie posters spanning his prolific Nikkatsu period through to his later independent films. Our holdings include rare first-release theatrical posters, original B2 designs and other scarce promotional material, with particular strength in his celebrated yakuza and avant-garde cinema.

Original Japanese posters for Suzuki’s films are especially prized for their bold typography, vivid colour, unconventional layouts and close relationship to the director’s highly stylised visual language. Early first-release examples are increasingly difficult to acquire and represent important artefacts of Japanese cinema and postwar graphic design.

Each poster is carefully sourced and individually catalogued in Japan, with attention to authenticity, original release history, format, condition and rarity.
