This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1988 for the first domestic theatrical release of AKIRA (アキラ), written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo from his own manga. First-issue Japanese country sheets for Otomo’s cyber-punk landmark are among the most sought-after anime posters.

Film background
Set in Neo-Tokyo, AKIRA follows biker friends Kaneda and Tetsuo as a military experiment unleashes catastrophic psychic power. A milestone of late-1980s animation, the film’s visionary design, adult themes and Geinoh Yamashirogumi’s choral score reshaped global perceptions of anime and influenced a generation of filmmakers and game artists.

Poster design
This classic first-release B2 centres Kaneda standing before the cityscape, gripping the particle-laser rifle. A strip of scene stills runs across the header, while the monumental logotype—black “AKIRA” block overlaid with the scarlet 「アキラ」—anchors the base. The composition’s steel-grey field and industrial detailing give the sheet superb wall presence; the domestic censorship seal (映倫) appears at lower right.
