“AKIRA – DTS Sound Edition” (アキラ), Original Japanese Promotional Poster 2002, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O107
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 2002 to promote the domestic DVD “DTS sound edition” release of Katsuhiro Otomo’s AKIRA. Issued for retailers (not sold to the public), these campaign sheets are very scarce and are highly collectible.
Film background
Otomo’s 1988 cyber-punk landmark, adapted from his 1982 manga, set a new bar for feature animation with its hand-painted cityscapes, experimental sound design, and adult science-fiction storytelling. The 2002 Japanese DVD reissue introduced a powerful DTS 5.1 mix for home video and coincided with the manga’s 20th-anniversary celebrations.
Poster design
Center frame, Kaneda sits defiantly amidst a heap of engines and wreckage—an Otomo illustration created for the “DTS sound edition” jacket—beneath the towering AKIRA logotype (black block letters overlaid with the scarlet 「アキラ」). Across the upper field, bold copy reads “DVD (DTS sound edition) … 12.21 ON SALE” with the special price line. A red banner along the base calls out “AKIRAコミック誕生20周年記念仕様,” tying the campaign to the manga anniversary. Clean white margins and crisp typography give this sheet tremendous wall presence.
